Peterlee was built after the Second World War as one of the country's new towns, and it is named after Peter Lee, a Durham miners' leader. It was planned to give families from the surrounding colliery villages modern homes, green space and a town centre of their own, and that planned layout still shapes the town today. Our team in Sunderland is a short drive up the A19, and we help households and businesses across Peterlee, Horden, Easington and the nearby villages.
Family homes and working from home
Most of Peterlee is residential, with estates of family houses built over several decades, and older terraced streets in Horden and Easington Colliery nearby. Many residents commute along the A19 to Sunderland, Teesside or Durham, and many now work from home for part of the week.
Home working puts new demands on a connection. Video calls need a steady upload speed, cloud files need to sync quickly, and the broadband has to cope when the whole family is online in the evening. When you compare packages, look at upload as well as download. Our home full fibre packages show the speeds and prices including VAT for your address, with yearly rises fixed in pounds and pence in your contract.
WiFi matters just as much. If the signal struggles to reach the back bedroom being used as an office, mesh units can spread it around the house. You can add them when you order, and our WiFi page explains how they work.
Switching from your current provider uses One Touch Switch, so you do not need to contact your old provider to leave. Read more on our switching page. Home customers also have 14 days to change their mind after signing up.
Local shops and services
The town centre, built around Castle Dene Shopping Centre, has shops, cafes, takeaways, salons, pharmacies and local services, and there are more small businesses in the villages around the town. For these businesses a dependable connection for card machines, bookings and stock systems is essential. Business full fibre gives you business terms, a router set up before you go live if you want one, and support from a team just up the road.
Sole traders who work from home, such as tradespeople, bookkeepers and online sellers, may not need business broadband at all. We will give you an honest view of which option fits the way you work.
Industrial estates beside the A19
Peterlee has long been an employment centre for East Durham, with the North West and South West industrial estates close to the A19. Manufacturers, engineering firms and distribution businesses here often run production and ordering systems in the cloud, send CCTV footage off site and need WiFi across large units. For busier sites a leased line gives a dedicated connection with the same speed in both directions and faster fault fixes. We survey each site before quoting.
A local landmark
Peterlee is also known for the Apollo Pavilion, the modernist concrete structure by the artist Victor Pasmore in the Sunny Blunts area, and for Castle Eden Dene, the wooded nature reserve on the edge of town. It is a reminder that the town was designed with care, and we aim to bring the same care to every installation. See our installation page for what to expect.
